2018: results of the year for Ukraine U-21 team
The youth national team of Ukraine once again did not reach the final part of the European Championship. This time - in 2019. This is the 11th selection for our U-21 team, which ended at the qualifying stage, out of 13 held.
It will be recalled that Ukraine reached the final only twice - at Euro 2006 and Euro 2011. In the first case, Oleksiy Mykhailychenko's wards played brilliantly and became the vice-champions of the continent, in the second case Pavlo Yakovenko's team did not leave the group.
Once again - during the Euro-2002 cycle - the Ukrainian youth team lost to Switzerland in the playoffs (although Volodymyr Onyschenko's boys took first place in the qualifying group, the regulations sent them to the playoffs).
Oleksandr Holovko's team did not fulfill the tournament task - they won five qualifying matches out of 10, suffered three defeats and took third place after England and Holland.
In general, the youth team in 2018 played surprisingly few games - two in March, September and October. In November, we already saw a completely new team - from players born in 1998-1999, who are waiting selection for Euro-2021.
Usually, the youngster plays two more matches at the traditional Valery Lobanovsky Memorial in May, but this year the U-19 team was preparing for the final of Euro-2018, where Alexander Petrakov's wards eventually became bronze medalists.
But Golovko coped with the task of giving the best performers to the national team. Among those who did not even play in the youth team in 2018, but were constantly involved in Andriy Shevchenko, we will mention Mykola Matvienko, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Viktor Tsygankov and Artem Besedin.
Both teams were represented by Andriy Lunin, Vitaliy Mykolenko, Viktor Kovalenko, Mykola Shaparenko, Maryan Shved and Andriy Boryachuk. Pavlo Lukyanchuk, Vasyl Kravets and Volodymyr Shepelev were called up to the national team but did not play in it in 2018.
In terms of staffing the national team, the youth team worked very well. However, Oleksandr Golovko's term has come to an end, other coaches will work with the new youth team.
Note also that in seven matches of 2018 Golovko involved 44 players. This is a lot, but 21 of them are already representatives of the new wave, a potential basis for the future team. Including 16 players born in 1998-1999 came on the field in sparring with Georgia.
