2019: results of the year for Ukraine U-21 team

The performances of the youth team of Ukraine in 2019 can be safely divided into two parts. In the first team played friendly matches, winning two international tournaments. The second is the selection of Euro-2021 (U-21).

In the spring of 2019, the head coach of the youth team Ruslan Rotan (replaced Alexander Golovko in December 2018) conducted selection work. And in March we had to count mainly on players born in 1998, and this generation, unlike in 1999 or 2000, never made it to the final tournament of the European Championship - neither in the U-17 category nor in the U category. -19.

Why were there such restrictions? The fact is that the Ukrainian U-20 national team was preparing for the World Cup in Poland, which ended only in June - the triumph of Alexander Petrakov's team, which brought together the best players born in 1999-2000 (plus Danilo Sikan in 2001).

And in March, the matches of the elite round of Euro-2019 (U-19) were held by the youth team under the leadership of Sergei Nagornyak. Therefore, Ruslan Rotan managed to get the optimal set of players only in early September - just before the start selection for Euro-2021 (U-21). And he was required to teach the players the game that Andriy Shevchenko built in the national team of Ukraine - with ball control, emphasis on attack.

Such football requires long-term training work, and preferably with the same team, and the coaches of the youth team were deprived of such an opportunity. We had to work already in the course of the play, the mistakes turned out to be very painful and led to three defeats in four fights.

We hope that by the end of the qualifying round Rotan and his assistants will reach the goal, and their team will play as it should ...
