National team profile: four series of penalty shootouts

In its history, the national team of Ukraine has so far participated in four series of penalty shootouts.

The first took place on August 15, 2005 in the semifinals of the Valery Lobanovsky Tournament, when our team lost to Israel in the post-match lottery. Oleksandr Shovkovskyi defended the blue-and-yellow goal. Anatoliy Tymoschuk, Ruslan Rotan and Oleg Gusev realized their shots, and Andriy Gusin missed.

In the second series, the national team of Ukraine won one of the most famous victories in its history. On June 26, 2006, in the 1/8 finals of the World Cup in Germany, our team defeated Switzerland. Alexander Shovkovsky became the hero, who did not allow his opponents to hit their goal once. Instead, the shots of Artem Milevsky, Serhiy Rebrov and Oleg Gusev reached the goal and brought Oleg Blokhin's wards to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Cypriot victories

Two more series took place during a friendly tournament in Cyprus in 2011. And in each of them our team was the winner.

Initially, in the semifinals of the Cyprus Football Association Cup, the national team of Ukraine defeated Romania. And again the hero of the penalty shootout was Alexander Shovkovsky, who before the final whistle was replaced by Andriy Pyatov. Andriy Yarmolenko, Anatoliy Tymoschuk, Artem Kravets and Ruslan Rotan realized their shots from the "point".

And already in the final of the tournament, the Ukrainians defeated the Swedes in a penalty shootout. Shovkovsky traditionally did an excellent job in the goal, and penalties were scored by Anatoliy Tymoschuk, Oleksandr Aliyev, Ruslan Rotan, Mykola Morozyuk and Yevhen Konoplyanka.
