Champions League among women's teams: the format of the tournament for the season-2021/2022

In the UEFA Women's Champions League 2021/2022, the teams will play their rivals at home and away for the first time in the group stage, reports the UEFA official website reports..

How will the tournament go?

The central stage is a group stage with the participation of 16 clubs. The teams will be divided into four quartets, in which they will play each other at home and away in the fall of 2021. The winners of the first two places will receive tickets to the playoffs, which will be held in the spring of 2022. In the quarterfinals and semifinals, the teams will play two matches, the final will consist of one match and will be held in Turin.

Four teams will receive direct tickets to the group stage, and the winners of the other 12 will be determined in the qualification for the Champions Path (7 places) and the Path of the League representatives (5 places).

Qualifications in both ways will be the same. In the first round, the teams will compete in the format of mini-tournaments, the winners of which will advance further. In the second round, the teams will be divided into pairs and they will play with each other at home and away.

How many clubs will play from each association?

List of participants is based on the female club rating of UEFA associations at the end of the 2019/2020 season. The top 6 associations will be ranked by three teams: France, Germany, Spain, England, Sweden, and the Czech Republic. The next 10 associations delegate two teams: Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Kazakhstan, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Scotland, Russia, Belarus. Other associations, including Ukraine, will be represented by one participant.

At what stage will the teams start the tournament?

The current champion and the champions of the three best associations (France, Germany, Spain) immediately go to the group stage. Champions of other associations will get into the Path of Champions qualification.

The champions of the associations ranked 4th to 6th (England, Sweden, Czech Republic) will start the tournament from the second round, others, including the representative of Ukraine, will start from the first round.

The vice-champions of the six strongest associations (France, Germany, Spain, England, Sweden, the Czech Republic) will start the tournament from the second round of the League. The third place winners of these six associations, as well as the second place winners of the next ten associations (Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Kazakhstan, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Scotland, Russia, Belarus) will compete in the first round of the League.
