U-21: results of the Euro-2021 qualifying tournament for Ukrainian team
Unfortunately, the Ukraine U-2021 team failed to make it to the finals of Euro-21. In total, this was the 14th cycle for our team, and it managed to get out of the group to the playoffs only four times, and to the finals - only twice (2006, 2011).
Over the past five cycles, the Ukraine U-21 team took third place in the qualifying group three times (including now), once came to the finish line fourth (Euro 2017 selection), but also reached the playoffs, taking second place. among the five teams in the selection of Euro-2015. Serhii Kovalets worked as a coach then, in the play-off matches his wards were knocked out by Germany (0: 3, 0: 2).
Ruslan Rotan failed to interrupt a series of mediocre performances of Ukraine U-2020. The problems started at the start, when the Ukrainians failed to break through the Finnish goalkeeper, but instead made two effective mistakes in defense. And the team met XNUMX, having three defeats in four matches.
The Ukraine U-2020 team performed much better in the autumn cycle of 21 and could even count on more. But the referees allowed a goal in our goal during the compensated time of the meeting in Aalborg, when the opponent dangerously, with the risk of injury, attacked Oleh Bilyk in his own goal area. The chances of catching up with the Romanians, who had two games left with Malta, fell to almost zero. Even a difficult victory over the main rival in Kyiv did not save.
The participants of group 8 came to the finish line in the following order: Denmark - 26 points, Romania - 20, Ukraine - 16, Finland - 13, Northern Ireland - 9, Malta - 1.
Nevertheless, the Ukraine U-XNUMX team was a constant supplier of players for the national team, fulfilling its main mission. From the very first day, Andrii Shevchenko actively called up talented young people in the main team of the country, leaving first Oleksandr Holovko, and in the last two years - Ruslan Rotan without the best performers. Vitalii Mykolenko, Andrii Lunin, Mykola Shaparenko, Yevhen Cheberko, Yukhym Konoplya, Illya Zabarny and Valerii Bondar have already played under Shevchenko, and a large group of footballers was in the training camp.
These personnel losses, multiplied by the problems with the coronavirus pandemic, significantly affected the capabilities of the Ukraine U-21 team, but the coaching staff found reserves among the younger players. Not only football players born in 2000-2001, who will form the basis of the team during the next qualifying round, received playing practice at this level. Even 18-year-old and 17-year-old players took part in the official matches, and 16-year-old Yehor Yarmolyuk took second place in the list of the youngest debutants of the Ukraine U-XNUMX team of all time. Dmytro Chyhrynskyi remains the first ...
