After defeats in the opening round qualifiers from the England team (1:2), Roberto Mancini's wards calmly dealt with Malta, the outsider of the group, as a reserve team. The Italians decided the issue in the first half thanks to accurate shots by Reteghi and Pessina — 2:0.
