Volodymyr Pyatenko: "Problems with implementation prevented us from performing better"

Women's National Team of Ukraine ended the struggle in the group round of the first ever League of Nations draw with December matches against Poland (0:1) and Serbia (1:0).

Volodymyr Pyatenko, acting head coach of the blue-yellow team, shared his impressions of these confrontations in a comment to the official UAF website:

— Before these matches, we still had a chance to move up in class. Only for this it was necessary to beat Poland and for Serbia to lose points with Greece. Unfortunately, this did not happen.

— In your opinion, the fact that when the Ukrainian women went out for a match against the Polish women, it was already known about the victory of the Serbian women, somehow affected the course of events in Stalova Vola?

- Hardly, because my wards were primarily interested in their match, and they were focused on winning over the Polish national team.

— Did the quick conceded goal affect the final result (0:1)?

- No. My wards, probably due to the fact that due to bad weather, they were preparing for the match in Stalova Vola only on an artificial surface, did not immediately adapt to the grass lawn. The rivals took advantage of this in their debut. Then we gradually moved the game away from our possessions, and in the second half we already dictated the conditions. By the way, that was the game plan, although of course we weren't going to concede in the opening game. The only thing that did not succeed was to realize the half-moments that we created near the goal of the Polish team.

I believe that we did not deserve to lose in Stalova Vola. We neutralized the leader of the Polish attack - Payor, who plays for the German "Wolfsburg", acted compactly, which prevented the face from creating free zones, and thanks to the undercover, we leveled the opponents' flank passages. Therefore, in the locker room, I thanked the girls for the game.

It should be noted that for various reasons with Poland, I could not involve several leading female footballers. It was important to approach the final match, with the Serbian women, in maximum readiness, because, unlike the home women, we were only satisfied with a victory, which still left a chance to keep registration in League B.

— Indeed, the motivation of the Ukrainian women should have been higher, because the Balkan women could no longer overtake the leaders of our group, the Poles...

— Yes, it was felt that the girls really wanted to take revenge for the defeat in the first round.

— The leader of the attack of the Polish national team, Payor, managed to be neutralized in Stalova Wola, but the Serbian team also had a recognized goal scorer - Damnjanovich, who plays for another German team, "Bavaria"...

— We decided not to play with her personally, but to closely guard her when she looks for free zones near our possessions. It was also important to cover the mobile Ivanovic, a left midfielder who interacts well with her scorer. We succeeded in this. But the most important thing is that we did score a goal!

The game was under our control, and under the curtain it did not even reach a primitive rush from the Balkans. We deservedly won - 1:0. I am glad that there were no injuries.

- What's next?

— We will fight for the extension of the registration in League B. The draw for face-to-face matches should take place on December 11. Our potential opponent will be someone from League C — Latvia, Montenegro, Bulgaria. These matches are scheduled for February 2024.

It will be recalled that the Ukrainian national team took third place in the group and managed to overtake Slovenia in the ranking of the third teams, thus avoiding relegation to League C. Now Volodymyr Pyatenko's wards are waiting for face-to-face matches, which will take place in February 2024 (the draw is on December 11).
