2023: results of the year for the Olympic team of Ukraine

The youth national team of Ukraine in 2023 produced a unique result and for the first time managed to make it to the Olympic Games, which will be held in the summer of 2024 in France. After the end of the Euro-2023 final tournament, Ruslan Rotan's team automatically became the Olympic team of Ukraine and is currently preparing for a visit to Paris-2024.

...And getting to OI was a very difficult task! Europe received only three passes for the participants of the Euro 2023 (U-21) final tournament, plus France qualified for the home Games without selection, automatically.

First, the Ukrainians had to leave the group (the opponents of the draw were not weak — Croatia, Romania, Spain), and then win the quarterfinal match and hope that either France or England will also reach the semifinals (Great Britain is participating in the Olympic Games, therefore, England as one of its constituents was not considered as a candidate for the OI).

Ruslan Rotan managed to gather the strongest youth football players at that time - with the exception, perhaps, of only Ilya Zabarny, who finally moved to the national team of Ukraine in the fall of 2020. But Anatoly Trubin, Georgy Sudakov, Vladyslav Vanat and Mykhailo Mudryk, having played in June for the national team in Serhiy Rebrov, sparring with Germany (on the 12th) and the Euro 2024 selection matches with North Macedonia (on the 16th) and Malta (on the 19th -th), already on the 21st, they played against the young Croats.

True, without Mudryk - the English "Chelsea" midfielder, the most expensive player of the Ukrainian national team, missed the entire group tournament due to injury and already played against France in the quarterfinals. Very timely, as we had old unsettled scores with this team - from the period of the qualifying tournament, when the French defeated the Ukrainians (5:0). The revenge turned out to be bright, strong-willed and, most importantly, timely, as it brought Ruslan Rotan's wards the same ticket to the Olympic Games (England's exit to the semi-finals closed all questions about quotas for the Olympic Games from Europe).

Unfortunately, with Spain, despite a quick goal in the 13th minute from Artem Bondarenko, the game did not go according to our script. But reaching the semi-finals of Euro-2023 (U-21) and breaking through to the Olympic Games in the global plan overshadowed one unsuccessful result with their positiveness.

A large group of football players of this composition (18) is suitable for performances for the U-21 team and in the next selection cycle - Euro-2025, the matches of which began in September 2023. For the first time in history, our youth national team was led by a foreign specialist - the Spaniard Unai Melgosa.
