New concept for men's national team competitions from 2028 approved

Following a thorough analysis of the current formats of UEFA men's national team competitions and consultations with all UEFA member associations, a new concept has been approved for implementation after the 2028 UEFA European Championship.

In the new structure UEFA Nations League, starting from the 2028/29 season, will move from the current four leagues to three leagues of 18 teams. Each league will consist of three groups of six teams, playing six matches against five different opponents: home or away against teams from other pots, and home and away against an opponent from their own pot. With 55 participants, League C will include one group of seven teams, with the schedule starting one window earlier. Quarterfinals, фFinal four and play-offs for promotion/relegation in the class remain without changes.

European qualification will also have multi-level structure:

 League 1, which will consist of 36 teams divisions A and B League of Nations;

— Lyoke 2, which will consist of the remaining 18 (or 19) teams League of Nations.

Ligue 1 will have three groups of 12 teams, formed by drawing three pots of 12 teams. Each team will play six matches at home or away against six different opponents. (by two rivals from each out of three basketand - similar to the format of UEFA club tournaments).

League 2 will be held exactly the same as division C League of Nations, with three groups of six teams (or one of seven).

Despite directly qualifying for the final tournament European Championship, the host teams will participate in the European qualifiers in order to determine their positions in the next Nations League draw.

The highest-ranked teams in each League 1 group qualify directly, while the remaining places will be allocated through a play-off system, ensuring a fair chance of qualification for League 2 teams as well (detailed qualification scheme here).

The concept will be refined over the next few months before being submitted for final approval at the next UEFA Executive Committee meeting in September. Fulltruth News The format will be presented at a press conference following this meeting.

Commenting on the new formats, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin noted:

"New formats will improve competitiveness"tion, will reduce the number of matches that are not of tournament significance, offer fans a more attractive and dynamic competition, while guaranteeing a fair chance of qualification for all teams and without adding any new dates to the international calendar.
