He was born on September 29, 1976 in the city of Yagotyn, Kyiv region. Married, has four sons.

As a football player, he played as an attacker for Dynamo Kyiv, Italian Milan and English Chelsea.

Has the title of Hero of Ukraine (2004) for exceptional sports achievements, significant personal contribution to the development of Ukrainian football, raising the authority of Ukraine in the world. 

Knight of the Order of Merit I, II, III degrees, Order of Courage III degree and Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise V degree. 

In August 2022, he became a laureate of the "National Legend of Ukraine" award.

Five-time Ukrainian football champion, Italian football champion.

In 2003, he became the first Ukrainian to win the Champions League.

The winner of the "Golden Ball" (2004) is a prize awarded to the best football player in Europe. 

The first Ukrainian football player who played 100 matches in the national team of Ukraine. 

The best scorer of the national team of Ukraine in history (48 goals). 

The captain of the Ukrainian national team, which at the 2006 World Cup under the leadership of Oleg Blokhin entered the top eight teams in the world.

From 2016 to 2021, he was the head coach of the national team of Ukraine. Under his leadership, the blue-yellow team made it to Euro 2020, where they entered the top eight teams.

After the full-scale invasion of Russia, he became the first ambassador of the UNITED24 platform.

On January 25, 2024, at the XXVI Congress of the UAF, he was elected president of the Ukrainian Football Association
