On March 18, 1987, before the match between Dynamo Kyiv and Turkish Besiktas in the Champions Cup, Igor Belanov was awarded the prize for the best football player in Europe.

The fact that Ukrainian footballer Igor Belanov won the most prestigious individual award in world football, the "Golden Ball" of the weekly France Football, was announced in the last days of 1986. The award ceremony took place a few months later, in Kyiv before the match with Besiktas, in which Dynamo won 2-0.

Igor Belanov is one of the three Ukrainian winners of the Golden Ball, along with Oleg Blokhin and Andriy Shevchenko. Today he works with them for the benefit of Ukrainian football.
