For Shakhtar Donetsk, the start in the tournament among the best clubs in Europe was already the 17th in history. The players entered the group stage directly as the first team of the preliminary championship of Ukraine as of February 24, 2022.

In the first round, the orange and black faced the fourth team of the last Bundesliga draw - "Leipzig". Ihor Jovichevich surprised somewhat with the starting line-up, releasing Konoplu on the left in defense, Shved on the right in attack and Zubkov on the wing.

Despite this, "Shakhtar" played with the Germans on equal footing from the beginning of the match. In the 12th minute, Trubin correctly chose his position and did not allow Nkunka to score from Silva's pass. Instead, the miners soon distinguished themselves - Gulaci made a mistake outside the penalty area, and the Swede sent the ball into an empty net. Maryan's debut goal for Shakhtar in only the second match.

In the future, the people of Donetsk defended competently and did not allow the opponents to create sharp moments near their own goal. At the same time, the actions of the players of "Leipzig" were lacking.

After the break, the Germans pressed Shakhtar against its goal and in the end managed to break the defense of the Ukrainians - in the 57th minute, Simakan managed to shoot from the near corner. However, the miners did not take long to respond - Mudryk broke through the flank and passed to Shved, who scored a double with the help of a ricochet.

"Leipzig" continued to possess the ball, in the 70th minute, Orban scored next to the post after a corner. However, the orange-black managed a sharp counter attack, as a result of which Mudryk increased the guests' advantage from Sudakov's pass.

Moreover, Shakhtar scored the fourth in the 85th minute. Konoplya launched Mudryk on the flank, Mykhailo shot at Traore, who sent the ball into the net. As a result, the people of Donetsk shocked the Germans on their field, winning for the whole of Ukraine — 4:1.
