Serhiy Sapronov: "The decisive match did not go without underestimating the opponents"
The women's national team of Ukraine WU-XNUMX returned from the Netherlands where the team took part in the second round of the 2024 European Championship qualifying. Our players finished last in their group and relegated to League B.
The head coach of the WU-17 team, Serhiy Sapronov, in a comment to the official website of the UAF, assessed the performance of his wards at the competition:
— In the final round, we were satisfied even with a draw with Turkey, which allowed us to overtake them by additional indicators. In my opinion, the fact that our team improved its game with each match, while the Turkish women, on the contrary, were crushed by the Spaniards and hosts, misled my wards. Even though I tried to set them up, they believed that even if they didn't win, they would draw for sure. This revaluation of their strength played a wicked joke on them.
At first, nothing foreshadowed trouble. We dictated the tempo and created dangerous moments near the goal of the opposite side, but it never came to a goal. However, the Turkish women opened the scoring in the middle of the second half and that knocked our girls off track. They were no longer able to unite in order to save themselves from defeat and relegation from the class of the strongest.
— For a whole group of your wards born in 2007, this was the last appearance for the Ukrainian national team of this age category...
— Yes, most of them were under my coaching for two years. I want to thank them for their cooperation, I will recommend some of them to the youth women's national team of Ukraine.
- Do you already know who will replace them?
— A group of 16-year-old girls who have already participated in the reported continental championship will remain in the national team. Already in the near future, it will be necessary to take care of supplementing the team with another 15-16 players born in 2008 and, in the future, in 2009. The lists are still being finalized. However, we should not delay, because in April we will perform in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the UEFA Development Tournament. And in the fall, the first round of qualifying for the 2025 European Championship begins, and we will make every effort to immediately return to League A.
