Zinchenko won the eighth European Cup from the countries of the Big Five for Ukraine
Oleksandr Zinchenko's victory in domestic cup tournaments of European Big 5 countries could boast of four Ukrainians.
Yesterday's victory of "Manchester City" over "Arsenal" (3: 0) in the final of the English League Cup brought Alexander Zinchenko the first English trophy. And even if the Ukrainian footballer never came on the field in the decisive match (he remained in reserve) - he fully deserved this triumph, because he played four matches out of six (409 minutes of play) in the tournament.
It is worth noting that until yesterday, only four former players of the national team of Ukraine could boast of real victories in the cups of the countries in the big five (England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France).
German success of Yuri Maximov
Yuri Makysmov became a pioneer, winning the German Cup in 1998/1999 as a member of Werder Bremen. Moreover, in the final with Bayern, which the Bremen team won in a series of post-match penalties - 5: 4, the Ukrainian midfielder ran away for 120 minutes and scored a goal. The main and additional time of the meeting ended in a draw - 1: 1.
Super-Alkaline and Ukrainian doublet
The next winner was Oleg Luzhny, who won the English Super Cup in 2002 together with Arsenal. However, in the match against Manchester United (2: 1), the Ukrainian appeared on the field only a few minutes at the end of the match (replaced by Ray Parlor).
Then there was a Ukrainian doublet in the 2002/2003 season. The same Luzhny played the whole winning match for Arsenal in the FA Cup final against Southampton (1: 0), and Andriy Shevchenko contributed to Milan's success in the Italian Cup.
The current coach of our national team came on as a substitute in the first match of the decisive two-match duel with Roma only in the 71st minute. However, this was enough for Shevchenko to score the ball and set the final score in the battle of Rome - 4: 1 in favor of the guests. In the return match (2: 2) Andriy didn't even need to leave.
Skrypnyk Cup and Shevchenko hat-trick
In the 2003/2004 season, another Ukrainian from Werder Bremen, Viktor Skrypnyk, won the German Cup. Our defender came out in the last minutes of the final meeting with "Alemania", which the Bremen team won 3: 2.
For Andriy Shevchenko, the match for the 2004 Italian Super Cup turned out to be truly triumphant. AC Milan defeated Lazio 3-0, and our striker played a full match and scored a hat-trick!
In the end, Shevchenko had the last Ukrainian triumph before Zinchenko's victory in the European Big 5 Cup tournament. In the 2006/2007 season, Andriy won the English League Cup as a member of Chelsea. Then Shevchenko played four matches in the tournament and scored three goals. He came on the field in a decisive duel. Ironically, the Ukrainian team was also opposed by Arsenal. The meeting ended with the victory of "Chelsea" - 2: 1, and our striker was replaced by Salomon Kalou in the added minutes.
